Steve has worked to reduce homelessness by stopping unfair rent increases and unfair evictions, building and preserving affordable housing, championing an affordable housing bond, and supporting creating 800 new shelter beds for women and children.(Read More)
Steve continues to work on advancing equity by hiring a diverse city workforce, accelerating public safety reforms, and creating inclusive economic opportunities for disadvantaged communities and small businesses.
Investing in Our Neighborhoods
Steve has worked to open new parks and playgrounds, fund literacy programs, champion the Powerhouse Science Center, and
reopen Washington Elementary as a STEAM School.
Steve has long worked to promote the arts through new innovation and equity grants for local artists, connect kids with art, and champion the Clara, the Sofia, the Verge, and the Warehouse Artist Lofts.
An Independent Voice
Steve led the charge to create an independent City Auditor and enact important data transparency programs at City Hall. Steve also led the opposition to the "Strong Mayor" campaign, which would have given the mayor sweeping new authority to bypass the elected City Council on a range of issues.
